It wasn't long after the terror attacks of 9/11 that the Air Force responded in a big way. On Oct. 7, 2001, Operation Enduring Freedom began. In the initial months, Air Force bombers flew night and day, conducting strikes on Taliban and al-Qaida positions across Afghanistan.
